Gout is a type of arthritis and as any type of illnesses it has some common symptoms of gout. Gout specifically affects the joints, as does any type of arthritis, and the big toe is a specific problem spot for those that suffer from gout. Some common symptoms include pain in the joint, redness in the joint, and swelling. Besides the big toe gout can also affect the feet, ankles, knees, elbows and hands.
Men type to suffer from gout much more then women, especially men over the age of 40. Gout is due to an increase in uric acid caused in the blood. Gout may be an indication of kidney problems as the kidneys filter out uric acid from the blood for excretion. If left untreated gout may develop into some serious health issues and may affect other health problems such as diabetes and heart disease.
Symptoms of gout tend to occur very quickly, from between 12 to 24 hours after an increase in uric acid levels. Though gout occurs swiftly it can be very difficult to go away. The most common symptoms include but are not limited to tenderness in the joint, hotness in the joint, red or shiny skin at the joint, severe pain and joint swelling. Some other minor symptoms include slight fever, nausea and loss of appetite.
Gout symptoms can last up to a few weeks though the faster the gout is treated the faster the symptoms will go away. Treatments can include taking NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications), paracetamol for the pain (aspirin should not be used as this will increase levels of uric acid), colchicines (blocks production of uric acid), steroids and drinking large quantities of water.
It should be noted that the best treatment is to prevent gout from occurring in the first place. There are medications available that can reduce the amount of uric acid produced or to increase the amount of uric acid excreted. You can also change your diet to avoid foods that are high in purines. When purines are broken down they form uric acid.
It can be difficult to diagnose gout because of the many symptom similarities to other health issues such as joint infections. A full medical history, blood test and even taking a sample of fluid form the affected joint may be necessary. Many times a blood test will be inconclusive and the only reliable test is to take a sample of the joint fluid.
